fearandhope:

This is a photograph called “Piss Christ” by artist and photographer Andres Serrano.
I was 17 years old in 1987 when I first saw this photo. The picture depicts a plastic crucifix in a yellow liquid. The artist (and the title) states that the liquid is the artists urine.
This picture had a huge impact on me. I have never forgotten it because it was one of the first pieces that actually made me THINK.
I attended Christian school for 7th and 8th grades and during that time I was told that I would go to hell for not being ‘saved.’ I repeatedly saw so much hypocrisy in the other students who had been ‘saved’. The fact that I listened to Van Halen and not Christian rock made me a ‘sinner’ rather than the fact that often the kids who were ‘saved’ were straight up mean as opposed to kind and were very often judgmental as opposed to tolerant. They were the antithesis of what I would HOPE a Christian would be.
By the time I saw the above piece of art I had started to really turn away from organized religion on the whole. I had started to realize that I would never find God in church. It took me many years to make peace with that fact and to find my own path.
